1. DOI System approved as an International Standard

The DOI System has been approved as an International Standard through ISO. The Final Draft International Standard (ISO/FDIS 26324, Information and documentation - Digital Object Identifier System) was approved by 100% of those voting in a ballot closing on November 15, 2010. The approved Standard is now moving through the ISO publication process; in parallel, the IDF will be modifying the DOI Handbook to reflect this standard and update parts of the Handbook which have been on hold during the ISO process (which began in 2006).
The ISO standard will complement, and be compatible with, the existing US National Standard ANSI/NISO Z39.84, Syntax for the Digital Object Identifier (2000, 2005, 2010), both in international acceptance and by expansion to cover a detailed extensible metadata schema and discussion of the guarantees provided re persistence etc.

2. DOI adopted by entertainment industry initiative

A new international coalition, led by MovieLabs, CableLabs®, Comcast and Rovi Corporation, has announced the launch of the Entertainment Identifier Registry (EIDR), a non-profit global independent registry that provides a uniform approach to cataloging movies, television shows, and other commercial audio/video assets with unique identifiers (IDs). It is being developed as an open, standards-based effort built on the Digital Object Identifier (DOI) system. In addition, it uses the open-source registry software from the Corporation for National Research Initiatives (CNRI). MovieLabs, representing the EIDR, is an IDF member and DOI Registration Agency.
The International DOI Foundation is delighted to welcome the movie and television registry, joining our existing family of registries and some 10,000 organizations worldwide using the DOI System with almost 50 million DOI names assigned to date. EIDR will bring considerable benefits to the digital entertainment industry and significantly increase content coverage to the DOI System.

3. DOI and ISBN collaboration

At the Frankfurt Book Fair 2010, the German ISBN Agency MVB launched its application (in co-operation with the DOI Registration Agency mEDRA) of the ISBN-A. The ISBN-A ("the actionable ISBN") is a service powered by DOI, in which an existing ISBN is expressed in the DOI System.
The guiding principles for referencing other identifier schemes within the DOI System are to maximise utility to potential users, and to maximise efficiency among established registries. The ISBN-A is the first practical example of the DOI System collaborating with an existing well-established registry system; the value of each system is enhanced if they work together.

The DOI is a system for interoperably identifying and exchanging intellectual property in the digital environment. A DOI assigned to content enhances a content producer's ability to trade electronically. It provides a framework for managing content in any form at any level of granularity, for linking customers with content suppliers, for facilitating electronic commerce, and enabling automated copyright management for all types of media. The International DOI Foundation, a non-profit organization, manages development, policy and licensing of the DOI to registration agencies and technology providers and advises on usage and development of related services and technologies. The DOI system uses open standards with a standard syntax (ANSI/NISO Z39.84) and is currently used by leading international technology and content organizations.
