DOI NewsMay 2010DOI® News is a public news release. Information contained within this newsletter may be reproduced and disseminated to all interested parties. In this issue:
1. DOI for Datasets: DataCite Summer Meeting 2010
DataCite, the international consortium for the citation of research data, is holding its first open meeting June 7th-8th 2010 in Hannover, Germany. Conference topics include metadata, peer-review, trustworthiness, best practises, and visualisation of data. DataCite, a federation of at present 12 major library or data members from 9 countries, was founded in December 2009 to facilitate access to research data sets over the Internet as citable objects, using the DOI System.

2. International DOI Foundation Annual Meeting 2010
The International DOI Foundation will hold its annual meeting following the DataCite meeting, on June 9 in Hannover. Topics will include discussion of the Foundation's current and future strategy and the DOI System infrastructure for Linked Data and other means of delivering DOI-related metadata and expressing relationships. This meeting is for IDF members only, plus selected external participants. The International DOI Foundation is governed by an elected Board of twelve members. Following the last member elections, the new Executive Committee of Jan Brase (DataCite: Chairman) Ed Pentz (CrossRef: Treasurer) and Craig Van Dyck (Wiley: Vice-chairman) reflects the significant role of DOI Registration Agencies alongside founding members.

3. DOI System Moves to Final ISO Standardization The DOI System has moved to the last stage of standardization through the International Standards Organization (ISO). Draft International Standard ISO/DIS 26324, Information and documentation - Digital Object Identifier System was approved in March 2010; the ISO DOI Working Group is now incorporating changes into a Final DIS for publication, expected in late 2010 or early 2011. Following preparation of the FDIS, the DOI Handbook will be revised to reflect its additional role as the User Manual for this ISO standard. The DOI factsheet on DOI System and Standard Identifier Schemes has also been updated to expand on aspects of the standard.

4. DOI-based Tool for Taxonomy IDF member NamesforLife, in partnership with the Society for General Microbiology and the International Committee on the Systematics of Prokaryotes, has announced the launch of a specialist browser tool which provides current information on taxonomic nomenclature of Bacteria and Archae, through DOI name links providing authoritative and persistent online annotation. This allows authors to obtain current data from the rapidly changing taxonomic literature easily, and allows third party re-use of the information as persistent and reliable current data. Expert annotation is presented via a menu that collocates with the occurrence of a name on a web page and links to other resources.

5. International DOI Foundation Launches shortDOI™ Service The IDF has launched the shortDOI Service, a public service, open to anyone, that creates shortcuts to DOI names, which are often very long strings. The service creates short handles of the form '10/abcde' and enables short HTTP URIs of the form 'http://doi.org/abcde' that are ideal for use in email, blogs, mobile messaging and more. The IDF runs two services based on handles: the DOI Service, and the shortDOI™ Service.

A DOI assigned to content enhances a content producer's ability to trade electronically.
